1- Go on, Bill, you tell 'em!

 

بیل! ادامه بده‏‏، خودت بهشون بگو

 

2: Tell the kids I'll pick 'em up after school.

 

به بچه ها بگو كه من بعد از مدرسه میرم دنبالشون

 

لغت:

'em: sometimes used as a short form of 'them'

 

3: We took the car in for a check, and it was A-OK.

 

ما برای اینكه ماشین را چك كنیم بردیمش داخل و (دیدیم) كه كاملا روبراه بود.

 

لغت:

A-OK: in good condition

 

4: I need that money bad.

 

خیلی به آن پول احتیاج دارم.

 

5: How bad do you want it?

 

(واقعا) چقدر دلت میخواد كه اونو داشته باشی.

 

bad: to a great or serious degree

 

6: I'm baking!

 

دارم میپزم

 

7: a baking hot day

 

یك روز خیلی داغ

 

لغت:

baking: used to say that a person or place is very hot

8: I couldn't believe it! She went ballistic just because there were peas in her pasta.

 

اصلا باورم نمیشه او فقط به خاطر اینكه در ماكارونی اش نخود (سبز) بود ناگهان از كوره در رفت

 

go ballistic: to suddenly become very angry

 

9: It's just a game. If you lose, big deal.

 

این فقط یك بازیه اگر هم باختید مهم نیست

 

10: What's the big deal? It's only a birthday, not the end of the world.

 

چرا این قدر مهمش میكنی؟ این فقط یك جشن تولده به آخر رسیدن دنیا كه نیست.

 

11: It's no big deal. Everybody forgets things sometimes.

 

اصلا مهم نیست. هر كس (بالاخره) بعضی وقتها چیزهائی رو فراموش میكنه

 

لغت:

big deal: used to say that you do not think something is as important as someone else thinks it is

 

12: That guy has one bitchin truck.

 

اون مرده یك ماشین خیلی خوب داره.

 

لغت:

bitchin: very good

 

13: Again you use The chili in your food while you know for me it’s kind of blah.

 

دوباره تو غذات فلفل استفاده كردی در حالیكه میدونستی طعمش برام جالب نیست.

 

لغت:

blah: not having an interesting taste, appearance, character etc

 

14: The blankety-blank key is stuck!

 

كلید فلان فلان شده گیر كرده

 

لغت:

blankety-blank: used to show annoyance when you want to avoid swearing

 

15: Forget all that bullshit and listen to me!

 

همه آن اراجیف را فراموش کن و به من گوش بده.

 

16: What he told me was a load of bullshit.

 

تمام آنچه او به من گفت، (فقط) یک مشت اراجیف بود.

 

لغت:

bullshit: something that is stupid and completely untrue

 

17: Julie's arm is busted and she can't take care of herself.

 

دست جولی شکسته است و او نمیتواند از خودش مواظبت کند

 

لغت:

busted: broken

 

18: He didn't look too tired, considering.

 

او خیلی خسته به نظر نمی آید، اگر دقت کنی

 

لغت:

considering: used after you have given an opinion, to say that something is true in spite of a situation that makes it seem surprising

 

19: That's a bunch of crap! I never said that.

 

اون یک مشت اراجیف است. من هرگز نگفتمش

 

20: He came out with a load of crap about how he'd tried to call me yesterday.

 

او سر اینکه چقدر خسته شد تا بتونه دیروز به من تلفن بزنه یک مشت اراجیف جور کرد.

1- He makes you laughf your head off.

از خنده روده برت می كند

لغات:

laugh your head off: informal to laugh very loudly : با صدای بلند خندیدن

 

2- The bastards have us cornered.

نامردها (پدر سوخته ها) ما رو توی منگنه گذاشتند.

3- I don’t mean to sound ungreatful, but …

منظورم این نیست كه از زحمات شما قدردانی نكنم ولی ....

توضیحات:

یعنی منظورم از بیان این مسئله عدم قدرشناسی من از زحمات شما نیست ولی ...

به یك مثال دیگر در این رابطه توجه فرمائید:

I don’t mean it like it sounds.

اینطور كه فكر می كنی (به نظر می آید ) نیست . منظوری ندارم

3- What has drawn you to this?

چه چیزی شما را درگیر این جریان كرده؟

4- I am terribly sorry, but that has nothing to do whit me.

خیلی متاسفم ولی من هیچ دخالتی نداشتم.

به مثالی دیگر در این رابطه دقت كنید:

What happened to your brother has nothing to do whit me.

اتفاقی كه برای برادرتان افتاد به من هیچ ارتباطی ندارد (من دخالت نداشتم).

5- Don’t brown nose.

چاپلوسی نكن (تملق نكن).

لغات:

Brown-nose: verb informal to try to make someone in authority like you by being very nice to them - used in order to show disapproval  تملق كردن

توضیحات:

مترادف غیر رسمی تر آن عبارت جمله ذیل می باشد:

Don’t be an apple polisher.

6- I’ll be damned.

باورم نمیشه.

توضیحات:

این عبارت معمولا در زمان دیدن چیزی بكار می رود كه برای شما بسیار تعجب آور و ناباورانه می باشد.

7- What gotten into you?

چی شده؟

توضیحات:

این عبارت به عنوان اعتراض از مرتكب شدن یك عمل غیر منطقی كه از فرد انتظار نمیرفته است بكار برده می شود به چند مثال دیگر توجه كنید:

What is eating you?

از چی ناراحتی؟

Whit is in you?

چته؟ ناراحتیت (دردت) چیه؟

8- You are hopeless. I wash my hands of you.

تو آمدم ناامیدی هستی (نمیشه روت حساب كرد) من كه دیگه با تو كاری ندارم.

 

9- Do you want it refill?

میل دارید دوباره برایتان (پرش) كنم

10- The position has been filled.

ببخشید یك نفر استخدام شد. (دیگه جای خالی برای شما نداریم )

11- I have my job on the line. (my job is on the line).

شغلم در خطر است .

توضیحات:

در هنگام بحث درباره موضوعی خاص با بیان عبارت فوق این مسئله را تاكید میكنید كه ممكن است در این ارتباط شغلتان را از دست بدهید.

 

12- Let me get this off my chest.

بزار حرم دلم را (عقده دلمو) برایت باز كنم.

13- I want you to turn in the man who did it to the police.

.از شما می خواهم اون مردی كه این كار را انجام داده به پلیس معرفی كنید

لغات:

turn somebody in : to tell the police who or where a criminal is به پلیس معرفی كردن

توضیحات:

به دو مثال دیگر توجه كنید:

 Jhon’s wife finally turned him in.

زن جان بالاخره اونو به پلیس معرفی كرد.

I don’t want to turn your ass in , Don’t concern.

ناراحت نباش تصمیم ندارم تن لشتو به پلیس معرفی كنم.

14- I have been trying to get him all day.

از صبح تا حالا دام دنبالش می گردم.

15- Don’t play that whit me.

با من یكی فیلم بازی نكن (سر منو گول نزن)

توضیحات:

به چند مترادف دیگر توجه كنید:

Don’t give me that song and dance.

Don’t make a fool of me.

16- I want to press charges.

من می خوام شكایت كنم.

توضیحات:

معمولا این عبارت در مراكز قانونی (اداره پلیس یا دادگستری) جهت اعلان شكایت از شخص یا سازمانی مطرح می شود.

17- your behavior is quite out of line. That’s the end. Shape up , or ship out.

رفتارت دیگر قابل تحمل نیست (از حد خودت خارج شدی) دیگه تمام شد یا خودت را درست كن یا از اینجا برو بیرون.

18- Behave yourself; I have a reputation to protect.

مواظب رفتارت باش. من اینجا آبرو دارم.

لغات:

Reputation: the opinion that people have about someone or something because of what has happened in the past آبرو اعتبار

 

19- Stop picking on me.

اینقدر سر به سرم نذار.

لغات:

pick on somebody/something: to behave in an unfair way to someone, for example by blaming them or criticizing them unfairly سر به سر گذاشتن طعنه زدن انتقاد بیجا كردن

 

20- I think he made one jump to much.

فكر میكنم خیلی بلند پروازی كرد.

۱– We started when the wind stopped .

هنگامی که باد ایستادحرکت کردیم


۲– A cold wind is blowing.

باد سردی می وزد


۳– To be sound in wind and limb.

جسما” سالم وقوی بودن


۴– Don't forget to wind up your watch .

یادت نرود ساعتت راکوک کنی

Each idiom or expression has a definition and two example sentences to help understanding of these common idiomatic expressions with 'as ... as'. Once you have studied these expressions, test your knowledge with this quiz testing idioms and expressions with 'as ... as'.

as bad as all that

Definition: As bad something appears to be

It isn't as bad as all that. You'll be fine tomorrow.
Losing the game isn't as bad as all that.


as big as life

Definition: An exaggerated way to state that someone appeared in a particular place.

There I saw him as big as life!
John came in the room and stood there as big as life.

as black as pitch

Definition: Very dark

I couldn't see a thing in the room because it was as black as pitch.
I can't see a thing. It's as black as pitch. Get a flashlight.

as blind as a bat

Definition: Very bad eyesight

He's as blind as a bat. You can believe what he says.
That ball was in! You're as blind as a bat!

as busy as a beaver / as busy as a bee

Definition: Very busy

I was as busy as a bee over the weekend. I got a lot done.
He's always as busy as a beaver. I wonder if he ever takes a break.

as clean as a whistle

Definition: Very clean

That car is as clean as a whistle now that you've washed it.
I like to keep my desk as clean as a whistle.

as clear as crystal

Definition: Very clear and understandable

Let me be as clear as crystal. Hurry up!
She was as clear as crystal about her intentions.

as cool as a cucumber

Definition: Calm and not nervous

You have to remain as cool as a cucumber to be successful.
I stayed as cool as a cucumber as finished the exercise.

as crazy as a loon

Definition: Very crazy

She's as crazy as a loon. You can't believe a word she says.
I wouldn't worry about his opinion, he's as crazy as a loon.

as dead as a doornail

Definition: dead

That's as dead as a doornail. Forget about it.
The project is as dead as a doornail.

as easy as pie

Definition: Very easy

You'll find the exercise is as easy as pie.
This game is as easy as pie.

as far as possible

Definition: As much as possible

I'll see what I can do as far as possible.
She went as far as possible in trying to get the project approved.

as flat as a pancake

Definition: Very flat

Kansas is as flat as a pancake.
Make sure the table is as a flat as a pancake.

as free as a bird

Definition: Feeling very free and care easy

Our children are away for the weekend so we're as free as a bird.
I used to feel as free as a bird when I was younger.

as good as done

Definition: Almost done

The job is as good as done.
We're almost ready to begin. The cake is as good as done.

as happy as a clam

Definition: Very happy and content

I'm as happy as a clam living in Portland.
She seemed as happy as a clam yesterday.

as hard as nails

Definition: Cruel and very hard

He's as hard as nails with his staff.
Don't work for her. She's as hard as nails.

as hungry as a bear

Definition: Very hungry

Do you have a sandwich? I'm as hungry as a bear.
When we arrived I was as hungry as a bear.

as innocent as a lamb

Definition: Without guilt

There's no way she could have done that. She's as innocent as a lamb.
He's only pretending to be as innocent as a lamb.

as mad as a hatter

Definition: Crazy

Don't believe anything he says. He's as mad as a hatter.
They threw him out of court because he was as mad as a hatter.

as old as the hills

Definition: Very old

My aunt is as old as the hills.
That car is as old as the hills.

as plain as day

Definition: Simple, clear

The facts are as plain as day.
What you need to do is as plain as day.

as pleased as punch

Definition: Very happy with something

He's as pleased as punch with the new boss.
She's as pleased as punch with her new car.

as quiet as a mouse

Definition: Very quiet, shy

She sat in the corner and was as quiet as a mouse at the party.
Can you believe that he was as quiet as a mouse when he was a boy?

as right as rain

Definition: Genuine and true

Yes, that's as a right as rain!
She feels his views are as right as rain.

as sick as a dog

Definition: Very sick

My brother is at home as sick as a dog.
I'm feeling as sick as a dog. I think I need to go home.

As sly as a fox

Definition: Smart and clever

She understood the situation and used it to her advantage because she's as sly as a fox.
Don't trust him because he's as sly as a fox.

as soon as possible

Definition: At the earliest moment possible

Could you reply to my request as soon as possible.
